Today, the recently-turned 90-year-old’s work looks a little different – taking place mostly indoors, and with a different crowd. Through her program called “Roots & Shoots,” Goodall empowers young people to create change within their communities. CNN spoke with Goodall recently during a trip to South Africa, where she observed some of the projects local Johannesburg students are heading up as part of Roots & Shoots. Goodall: I think it’s really important, this exchange of information from the elders to the youngers. Goodall: When I began Roots & Shoots in Tanzania in 1991, it was because I was meeting young people then who had lost hope.

CNN —Undefeated boxing champion Claressa Shields made history in another sport on Saturday, as she made her return to mixed-martial arts (MMA). The 28-year-old earned a split decision win over Kelsey De Santis in what was the first professional female MMA bout held in Saudi Arabia. In January, Hattan Alsaif made history as the first Saudi woman to join a global MMA promotion. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman previously said he doesn’t “care” about the country’s investment in sport being described as sportswashing. Shields and De Santis were fighting on the undercard of the PFL vs Bellator event, promoted by Bellator MMA and the Professional Fighters League.

When Caitlin Clark moves — weaving through defensive traffic; waving unsubtly for a teammate’s pass; wriggling free enough to catch, fire, catch fire — people tend to follow. Young girls and old men tug at “22” Clark jerseys that flap above their knees. Stewards of the sport, wary from experience, permit themselves to wonder if something might be different this time. “I’ve stayed away from basketball,” said C. Vivian Stringer, the Hall of Fame former coach at Rutgers and Iowa who retired in 2022. “But how can you stay away from Caitlin Clark?”

Nature provides much of the soundtrack to “ All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt,” a poised and occasionally transcendent debut from writer-director Raven Jackson. This might be a lot of talk about sound design to start, but it’s also a bit of a primer on what to expect from “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt,” which counts “Moonlight” filmmaker Barry Jenkins among its producers. “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” is a collection of moments in the life of Mack (Charleen McClure as an adult, Kaylee Nicole Johnson as a child), sometimes skipping back and forth in time. And with “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt,” Jackson has firmly established herself as a filmmaker to watch. “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt,” an A24 release in theaters Friday, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for “thematic content and brief sensuality.” Running time: 97 minutes.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —An 82-year-old man in South Korea had a heart attack after choking on a piece of “live octopus,” or san-nakji, a local delicacy comprised of freshly severed – and still wriggling – tentacles. When first responders arrived on site, the man had a cardiac arrest, and they conducted CPR, the official said. San-nakji refers to a small octopus that is sliced and served raw, often eaten in South Korea’s coastal areas or seafood markets. Though the dish’s name translates to “live octopus,” this is slightly misleading – the octopus is killed before serving, with its tentacles cut into portions. San-nakji is often served with sesame oil, sesame seeds, and sometimes ginger, and has a chewy texture.

I wheeled us right, then left, then left again. I raced it back to our street with the row of brownstones, their gracious stairs. I wasn’t strong enough to maneuver a baby in a stroller up 10 steps. And if I took him out of the stroller, the risk was high that he would lose his mind. But when my body settled, something deep inside me settled, too.

During the first spring of the pandemic, my two daughters and I taught ourselves to rescue frogs. On our daily walks along a riverbank in rural North Carolina, we often came across the stirring of young life. Transparent strings of tadpole eggs and wriggling green tadpoles lay in murky puddles that would soon dry up in the sun. It’s a reminder to look at our immediate environment, our close neighbors and community spaces, and to take action from there. Eventually, I realized that my most significant impact would be on the political races closest to home.

The nurse practitioner on duty that day was employed by Corizon Health, Inc., one of the nation's largest private prison healthcare providers. Under federal law, a bankruptcy judge may respond to evidence of self-dealing or perjury by appointing a trustee to take control of the bankrupt company, bankruptcy experts told Insider. Just six months before the Garcia family was scheduled to have their day in court, Corizon filed for bankruptcy. "The Corizon bankruptcy is presently in a court ordered mediation, and we are seeking a global resolution for all the parties involved." Goldberger's attorney, Joseph Haspel, responded to queries with a statement saying that "Mr. Goldberger is a passive investor" in Corizon, Tehum, YesCare, Perigrove, and Perigrove 1018.

CNN —The US Women’s National Team was a post width away from exiting the Women’s World Cup at the group stage, but survived a late scare to earn a goalless draw against Portugal and reach the last 16. Defeat for the USWNT – a team aiming for a third consecutive world title – would have ended its participation in the tournament. The gap between the top-ranked teams and others has closed significantly in the four years since the last Women’s World Cup. “What this World Cup shows now is that the women’s game is growing a lot and because of that you have these kinds of results that before the World Cup nobody believed would happen,” Portugal coach Francisco Neto told reporters. “We had our World Cup on the line,” veteran Megan Rapinoe, who came on as a second-half substitute, admitted afterwards.

He would pour some coffee into a bowl of rice, and that would be the boy’s breakfast. No one from the Navy ever stopped the old man and the young boy. Some mornings, his grandfather would take Roy back across the dirt road into the jungle to pick papayas, lemons and coconuts. He would thrash a course into the thicket to collect firewood from the slender trees — tangen tangen in CHamoru, the language of the Indigenous inhabitants of Guam, which Roy’s grandmothers and grandfathers were. “We’re taking care of it because we hope, one day, in the future, our land will be returned to us.”

Jerusalem CNN —President Mahmoud Abbas, the 87-year-old veteran who has led the Palestinian Authority for nearly two decades, is trending on Palestinian social media – but not in the way he might like. His phrase “Protect us” – “Ehmouna” in Arabic – quickly became a trending topic on social media. The boy, wriggling in the backseat of a car, childishly says “Ehmouna, ehmouna for Allah’s sake” as other people in the car laugh. The Palestinian Authority has not held presidential elections since May 2006 – repeatedly postponing votes – leaving the Palestinian people with few ways other than social media to make their voices heard. Two Palestinians sarcastically attempt to “act as President Abbas requested” in one video.

But it doesn’t say what should happen if the character dies and comes back to life as a tree — or at least a treelike variety of zombie. Then the love of his life, an ex-girlfriend named Lily, dies by suicide. But lo, somehow, here she is after her burial, undead, with dirt in her mouth and worms wriggling on her neck. Finn is still in love with Lily. Lily is still in love with Finn.

A viral video on TikTok shows an alien-looking shark egg found on a California beach. The corkscrew-shaped egg came from a California horn shark, the TikTok user said. The video shows the "pliable" egg — and the tiny shark embryo moving inside. In the video, she shows the egg — which she says came from a California horn shark — is pliable and squishy but will harden over time. At one point in the video, the camera gets close enough to the egg casing to see the tiny, wriggling embryo inside.
In mesmerizing moments like this, FastHorse neatly sets up the tension between identity and the performance of identity — a tension she doesn’t resolve but upgrades over the course of the play to a full-scale paradox. FastHorse, a member of the Sicangu Lakota nation of South Dakota, gradually introduces the horrifying undertow of that fact with filmed segments screened briefly between the live scenes. Distressingly, these segments are based on Thanksgiving projects that real teachers have posted online. In one, adorable young children performing “The Nine Days of Thanksgiving” are made to list the many things, like “six Native teepees,” that Indians “gave” the Pilgrims. Though this is crucial to the play’s project of undoing centuries of racist mythologizing, I was left a bit queasy thinking about the young performers.
"The Last of Us" on HBO Max depicts a zombie apocalypse caused by a fungus pandemic. Here's the science fact and fiction behind the show, and the possibility of a fungal pandemic. The new scenario, first realized in the video game that the show is based on, is making viewers wonder whether a fungus pandemic can happen in real life. "A fungal pandemic is definitely possible," Norman Van Rhijn, a mycologist researching fungal infections at the University of Manchester, told Insider in an email. Still, fungal infections are on the rise worldwide, and researchers are concerned that more and more people are at risk.
